Basketball fans out there may remember the 1983 NCAA Basketball finals, when NC State upset Houston 54-52. What they may have forgotten was that Houston played the NC State half court style and was down 8 at the half, got into a rhythm, played their Phi Slamma Jamma style and surged to an 8 point lead (16 point swing!), then inexplicably fell back into half court ball and lost.
It seems that the Democrats are at risk of doing the same thing through an inexplicable seried of tone deaf utterings:
In Lebanon, VA, Senator Obama says if you put lipstick on a pig it is still a pig, which-combined with previous democratic comments-is construed as an attack on Sarah Palin (especially in light of her Hockey Mom joke at the RNC).
It is revealed next that in a recent speech Obama plagiarized a lengthy passage from an editorial cartoon…and we shall omit Biden-Kinnock comparisons for now.
Today Joe Biden steps in it. It appears that during a campaign event in Columbia, Missouri, Biden did not have the courage to mention his Republican counterpart by name but said,:
“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy … and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect…Well, guess what, folks? If you care about it, why don’t you support stem cell research?”
It is pretty clearly a shot at Governor Palin, who does not support stem cell research adn whose 5-month-old son, Trig, has Down syndrome.
The fact that Senator McCain supports stem cell research further underscores this was a direct attack on Governor Palin.
Now the news cycles will be absorbed to some degree with these verbal kerfluffles. Obama will claim he was not attacking Palin, they will claim either coincidence or bad staff work on the Tole plagiarizing, and Biden will wobble hither, thither, and yon and paraphrase Claude Rains in Casablanca and say “I am shocked, shocked to think you could imagine that I would attack my fair opponent.”
There is a terribly undiscplined aspect to the Democratic campaign. At the same time that John McCain needs to let the Big Dog Eat, BarJoe need to stop being trying to be cute and memorable and instead focus on the issues. They have the fundamental topography of this campaign going in their favor, and they keep finding ways that allow the GOP to pull them off message. The Democrats should have already put them away, yet they find ways to step on their own feet.
I sense that the longer BarJoe allow Team McCain to stay in the race, the more likely a GOP win becomes. We shall see!
