Lance Armstrong announced in a VF.com interview that he will compete in the 2009 Tour de France, and will post his blood tests on line. His stated reason is to bring attention to the worldwide fight against cancer.
This announcement will likely send the whole of France into a frothing glee at the chance to catch Armstrong doping, which so many are convinced he did…despite seven years of constant testing that did not mange to reveal an infraction.
I offer two thoughts. First, cycling in the USA needs Armstrong back. Can you imagine NIKE doing an advertisement like this with any other cyclist?
Plus, I really like the music…
Second, this guy is a competitor like no one in cycling, and like few in any other sports. Watch the following, watch Armstrong come back from two falls and rolling with bad equipment to put away the 2003 TdF.
I don’t know if he will win another Tour de France. I don’t even know if he will get through drug testing in one piece. But he will make cycling a sport to be noticed again, and in the name of a good cause.
Ride like the Wind, Bullseye, er, I mean…Lance!
UPDATE: Then again, not everyone is positive about this idea.
