The Day the Music Died…

Today is more than a special election in Fairfax County…

Today is the fiftieth anniversary of the plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson while on the midwestern Winter Dance Party tour, an event later memorialized (along with much of the 1960’s) in the song “American Pie”.

The event is one steeped in memory that has evolved into legend with the help of this song and its depiction in biopics of Holly and Valens, and has been helped along by the unfortunate number of rock musicians who have died in plane crashes.

One of the more remarkable facts is that the Big Bopper was supposed to be on a bus, but had developed flu. One of Buddy Holly bandmates agreed to ride the accompanying bus and give his seat to The Bopper.

The bandmate? Waylon Jennings, who some of you have probably heard of…

A lot of talent went down in that crash…so sit back, remember, and enjoy…
